                          General Information
Important School Policies
     ADDRESS AND/OR PHONE NUMBER CHANGE
It is the responsibility of every parent or guardian to assure that the school has an updated home address and telephone number on file in the office.  It is also imperative that we have a phone number of someone other than the parent that we can contact in case of an emergency.  PLEASE remember that this requirement is important to assure the health and safety of your child/children.
ATTENDANCE
Children are expected to be in school every day.  When children must be absent from school due to illness, we ask that parents call the school each morning that the child will not be in attendance.  A copy of the School Committee attendance policy can be found in the DISCIPLINE CODE booklet.
BICYCLES
Children may take their bicycles to school from the first day of school until November 15th.  Weather conditions in any given year may require that these dates be adjusted.
PERSONAL APPEARANCE
A child who comes to school clean and properly dressed will be in the right frame of mind to learn well.
The school committee has determined that the responsibility for appropriate appearance lies with the parent.  To require school administrators to devote valuable time to upholding a detailed dress code cheats both the student and the teaching staff of a valuable resource.
MEDICATION
As a rule, medication is not to be given in school.  Medicine is treatment and as such is not part of the school health services.  In most cases, pupils who are on prolonged medication can have the doses adjusted so the routine time for taking their prescription will come while they are out of school.
It is the exceptional case where an emergency dose (Tylenol, cough drops, etc.) is to be given during school hours and this is only when covered by:
     l.  written, signed and dated request with instructions for dispensing medication from the child's physician
     2.  written, signed and dated request from parent authorizing us to follow the doctor's order.
Personal and private terms are established for youngsters who take medication as part of their educational program.
BEHAVIOR
Unacceptable behavior will be dealt with on an individual basis.  Exclusion from recess and ultimately after school detention are options that teachers may use to assure appropriate behavior.
Please remember noon mothers, crossing guards and bus monitors, who assist your children throughout many of these daily activities, deserve the same respect as any other school employee.  See the DISCIPLINE CODE booklet for more detailed information.

A more comprehensive guide to Litwin information and policies can be found in the LITWIN HANDBOOK.
