How Our School Got its Name

Sgt. Robert R. Litwin

The Sgt. Robert R. Litwin School was dedicated on June 8, l968, in memory of Sgt. Robert R. Litwin and Vietnam War Veterans from Chicopee, Massachusetts.
Robert R. Litwin was a platoon sergeant in the United States Army.  He trained at Fort Bragg, North Carolina to become a paratrooper.  Sgt. Litwin served as a rifle platoon sergeant of an infantry company of the 173 Regimental Combat Team.  He died while on a mission near Dak To, Vietnam in June, 1967. He and his wife, Theresa, had two children, Donna and Robert.  Theresa was presented, posthumously, The Distinguished Service Cross in January, 1968. When presenting the award to Mrs. Litwin, Brig. General John J. King said that Sgt. Litwin's heroism and devotion to duty reflect "great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army."
We are proud to have our school named after Sgt. Litwin.
